Lab 4: Cost of Housing

Navigated through Canadian Census Analyser site (CHASS) and downloaded cost of housing data for Vancouver and Montreal, then moving them into the file Geodatabase.

This map comparison of Vancouver and Montreal represents a Choropleth map of housing cost within each city boundary. The numbers represent a minimum of tens of thousands of dollars and goes to a maximum of millions of dollars.

Vancouver vs Montreal

Data source (limited access): Canadian Census Analyser

Shelter Cost textuality: The average price of real estate in a Dissemination Area in tens of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars.

Implications of using solely 'Shelter Cost': It does not reflect the affordability of homes in an area since the data map does not provide median income of household within the area. Moreover, it does not reflect the cost of living. Though as a Vancouverite myself, I can attest to the extremely unaffordable houses and rentals in Vancouver, paralleled with a higher cost of living and low median income.
